Smart Reasons to Choose smartIPR

Smarter 3-in-1 Disk Design
The smartIPR Disk Pro features a patented non-spinning design with three
working sectors built into each disk, providing superior control and safeguard
adjacent tooth surfaces, ensuring reduction occurs only where intended.
4 Disk Sizes + 3 Sectors Each = 12 Instruments
Controlled Vibration. Enhanced Protection.
Precision Without Rotation
The smartIPR Handpiece Pro delivers precise, controlled vibration instead of spinning motion. This innovative design helps protect hard and soft tissue during treatment.
Sonic Vibration at Work
Powered by sonic vibration, smartIPR Disks operate at 128–192 Hz — up to 100 times faster than traditional hand-strip motion.**
The Smarter Way to Create Space
By transferring energy through controlled vibration to the periodontal ligaments, smartIPR Disks gently move through contacts to create space and polish enamel without cutting.

smartIPR Frequently Asked Questions
What is smartIPR and how is it different from hand strips or spinning disks?
smartIPR is a system that utilizes a vibrating (oscillating) handpiece with non-rotating disks to perform interproximal reduction (IPR). Unlike traditional hand strips, rotating disks, or high-speed air rotor burs, smartIPR creates space gradually while simultaneously polishing enamel. This approach offers greater control, improved precision, and enhanced safety for both the clinician and the patient.
How does smartIPR compare to traditional hand stripping?
Traditional hand stripping relies on manual movement, typically operating at approximately 1–2 cycles per second (Hz). In contrast, the smartIPR handpiece oscillates at 128–192 Hz, delivering significantly greater efficiency and consistency.
This higher frequency allows clinicians to create space more predictably with less physical effort, while maintaining excellent tactile control. Patients also notice the difference—smartIPR’s high-frequency motion delivers a smoother, more comfortable experience, unlike traditional hand stripping (often performed without lubrication), which can feel like a “nails on a chalkboard” sensation.
How does smartIPR create space without cutting hard or soft tissue?
smartIPR delivers controlled vibrational energy through non-rotating disks. Because there is no spinning or cutting action, the system moves gently through tight contacts, helping reduce the risk of soft and hard tissue trauma while creating space between teeth.
How do smartDISKs work?
Each smartDISK is divided into three working sectors:
U (up): Single-sided diamond coated, facing away from the handpiece (~0.07 mm)
D (down): Single-sided diamond coated, facing toward the handpiece (~0.07 mm)
UD (double-sided): Diamond coated on both sides and matches the labeled thickness
This design allows clinicians to begin with a thinner working surface and progressively move to thicker ones, enabling precise, step-by-step interproximal reduction.
What sizes are available for smartDISKs?
smartDISKs are available in four sizes:
0.1 mm (labeled 1)
0.2 mm (labeled 2)
0.3 mm (labeled 3)
0.4 mm (labeled 4)
The number on each disk corresponds to the thickness of the double-sided (UD) sector.
Why does each smartDISK have three sectors?
The three-sector design provides procedural flexibility. Clinicians can use a thinner single-sided sector (U or D) to open tight contacts, then transition to the double-sided sector (UD) to achieve the final desired spacing—all with the same disk. The single-sided sectors also allow practitioners to selectively reduce enamel on one tooth surface while maintaining a non-coated surface against adjacent teeth for added safety.
Can I start with a 0.2 mm smartDISK?
Yes—if there is already sufficient space between the teeth to allow the disk to vibrate into and pass.
If no space exists, begin with the 0.1 mm disk using a single-sided sector (U or D, ~0.07 mm) to open the contact. Then:
Use the double-sided sector (UD) to reach 0.1 mm Move to the 0.2 mm disk, starting with a single-sided sector Finish with the double-sided sector to achieve 0.2 mm
Progression to larger smartDISKs requires adequate space, as smartDISKs rely on vibration rather than cutting.
Is there a 0.5 mm smartDISK?
No, a 0.5 mm disk is not currently available. To achieve 0.5 mm of space, use the 0.4 mm disk and polish the space to the desired width.
How often should smartDISKs be replaced?
The 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm disks are used most frequently and will wear faster than larger sizes. While smartDISKs are durable, they will gradually lose thickness and effectiveness over time.
A 0.1 mm disk can be used to create interproximal space in up to approximately 100 contacts, depending on technique and clinical conditions. Because the system relies on vibration rather than cutting, sufficient space must be established before progressing to thicker disks to maintain optimal performance and efficiency.
Why is IPR Glide used during the procedure?
IPR Glide acts as a lubricant during interproximal reduction (IPR), helping to reduce friction, heat, and patient discomfort. It also supports enamel protection and remineralization, making it beneficial during and after the procedure.
The smartIPR system requires a lubricant to properly facilitate the vibration of the smartDISKs as they move through the contact. Using the system without IPR Glide is not recommended, as it can reduce the lifespan of the disks and increase the risk of enamel damage.
IPR Glide can be applied either directly to the smartDISK through its lubrication perforations or to the occlusal surface between the teeth being treated.
What is included in a smartIPR system?
A typical smartIPR system includes:
smartHANDPIECE – Oscillating/vibrating handpiece
smartDISKs in four sizes (0.1 mm, 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.4 mm)
smartBLOCK – disk organizer
smartGAUGE – measuring gauge
IPR Glide is currently sold separately.
Kit contents may vary slightly depending on the distributor.
What type of motor is required to operate the smartIPR handpiece?
The smartIPR handpiece is designed to fit most slow-speed dental motors using a short E connection.
Offices using Midwest or Star air-driven slow-speed motors will require an air motor with a short E connection, as standard configurations may not be compatible. Most electric motors already have a short E connection and will operate the smartIPR handpiece.
When using an electric motor, operate within 20,000–30,000 RPM. For clinicians new to the system, a range of 20,000–25,000 RPM is recommended to optimize control and performance.
*smartIPR system is not available in all countries. See your local distributor for details.
