Primary Swallowing Pattern
The perioral and mentalis muscles contract to create a lip seal, generating intraoral negative pressure — a physiological mechanism, the same as infants use when nursing.
The Consequence
This pattern after the age of three prevents proper tongue positioning, affects breathing, and may influence dentofacial balance when functional dysfunctions are present.
